The Coorong is a coastal lagoon at the mouth of the River Murray. (ABC News)

Police have arrested a man they say was involved a violent altercation on South Australia's Coorong.

They say the 20-year-old local man is expected to be charged with the attempted murder of another man about 3:00am at the Coorong Hotel Motel on the Princes Highway at Policeman Point.

The victim was treated by paramedics and taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, about 200 kilometres away.

He has serious, but not life-threatening injuries and is in a stable condition.

The arrested man was found about 8:30am and taken to the Murray Bridge police station.

Senior Constable Kate Dawson said the two men knew each other.

"The suspect had left the scene prior to police arrival but is believed the suspect is known to the victim," she said.
