Man walks into police station with gun in a bag and hands himself in

A man walked into a police station with a gun in a bag and handed himself over to officers.

The 36-year-old is believed to have attended St Anne's Street station on Monday night while carrying a hand gun and ammunition.

He reportedly told officers he was carrying the gun leading him to be arrested and the bag searched.

When police searched the bag he was carrying, a loaded weapon was found.

The man's home was later searched by police who found a number of other weapons including a crossbow and a knife but it is not yet clear why he handed himself into police.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the arrested and said: "A 36-year-old man from Wavertree will be questioned by detectives after handing himself in at St Anne Street police station in possession of a handgun and ammunition.

"When officers searched his bag they found an automatic Colt handgun containing a number of rounds of ammunition.

"During a subsequent search of his home officers also found a knife and crossbow, which have been seized."
