A man was seen walking home down the M62 in the early hours of Easter Monday.
North West Motorway Police were called to reports of a pedestrian between junctions 5 (Bowring Park) and 6 (Tarbock Island) of the motorway at around 4am on Monday.
Officers were sent to the scene to locate the man and get him to safety.
He was removed a short time later by police, who said the dangerous decision "could have cost him his life."
In a tweet, police said: "Just had reports of a pedestrian on M62 between junction 6 and 5.
"Male was located by #MC18 and removed from the motorway. Certainly not worth the risk of walking on the motorway.
"It may be a quicker route home, but it could have cost him his life. #JustNotWorthIt."
