The man, who asked to remain anonymous, said he wanted to make sure people were aware this was happening and to prevent it from happening again.

The social media post read: "Make sure if your fuel cap cover isn't electronically locked that your actual fuel cap is locked! My brother has had his car siphoned at some point over night because his fuel cap is faulty and doesn't lock.

"Apparently people are now skipping the queues and looking for other sources."

There was no damage to the car.

Responding to comments underneath the post, he added: "Nobody needs to panic regardless, this is not a post to incite panic... it's a post to remind people to spend two seconds extra to check their caps are locked.

People commented under the post to share their shock and sadness that the incident took place.

One person said: "Crazy, crazy, crazy! Sorry to hear this happened…"

Another said: "There are definitely some greedy or selfish people out there , usually just thieves taking advantage of a situation, so sorry it happen , the world is getting worst sadly "

Another woman responded to the post and said: "Thanks... just locked it for the first time in ages."
