Man waiting for bus in Sydney's CBD stabbed in neck in 'random attack'

Emergency services were called to Carrington Street outside Wynyard Station after reports of the stabbing.

A man was stabbed a number of times in the back of the neck by another man outside a busy railway station in the Sydney CBD, according to witnesses, with police later arresting a man.

Emergency services were called to Carrington Street outside Wynyard station about 2:00pm after reports a man had been attacked by another man while waiting in a bus queue.

The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a stable condition.

Witness at scene had said it appeared the weapon used in the stabbing was an Opal card — the card used by Sydney commuters to catch public transport.

However, police revealed this evening the weapon was in fact a knife.

The area, a busy area in the Sydney CBD, was cordoned off with tape while police spoke to witnesses.

Several people told police the attacker, aged in his 30s with a "noticeable boil" on his face, fled the scene towards York Street.

Police arrested a man nearby about an hour after the incident.

He was taken to Day St Police Station for questioning.

Police said it appeared neither man knew each other and it was a random attack.

Inquiries are continuing.
