Anthony Martial is a major concern for Manchester United ahead of Jose Mourinho’s return to Old Trafford.
The France forward suffered a muscle strain late on against Aston Villa on Sunday, making him doubt for the visit of Tottenham.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping for better news with Scott McTominay, who is still recovering from the ankle injury he picked up before the last international break.
Nemanja Matic is also closing in on a return to action.
Ahead of a crucial few days when United face Spurs and Manchester City, Solskjaer delivered a warning to his underperforming squad.
“Players are never undroppable,” he said. “Players are also playing for their place in the long term. We have a situation at the moment where we've had injuries, so players have played.
“I've been part of a squad where you're never guaranteed a place in the team and that's where we're going to get to at this club as well.
“I believe in these players and that we can win any game on any given day. But then I've said as well there’s that inconsistency. We need to look at that and get more consistency.
“For me, when we get players back, when we've got the full squad fit, I'm sure we can challenge and move up the table.
“It's two points up to Tottenham, fifth. We ended up sixth last season, we want to improve on that.”
If Martial fails to recover in time, it could see Solskjaer opt for a three-man central defence, with Marcus Rashford and Daniel James playing as a wide front two.

Possible United XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Lindelof, Williams; McTominay, Fred, Pereira; Rashford, James
