The FA confirmed new transfer rules on Tuesday evening which will come into effect after Brexit and they will have a major impact on the way clubs do their business.
As part of the new rules, sides will no longer be allowed to sign young players under the age of 18 from foreign clubs and that could have a huge knock-on effect.
In a statement, the FA confirmed: "Under FIFA’s rules, the UK’s exit from the EU will also mean that clubs will not be able to sign players from overseas until they are 18."
Over the summer, Manchester United brought in a total of six talented youngsters under the age of 18 from overseas academies but none of those players would have been able to join under the new regulations.
Defender Willy Kambwala was signed from French club FC Sochaux, left-back Alvaro Fernandez was brought in from Real Madrid, right-back Marc Jurado was poached from Barcelona, winger Alejandro Garnacho joined from Atletico Madrid, attacker Isak Hansen-Aaroen made the move from Norwegian outfit Tromso and goalkeeper Radek Vitek left Czech side Sigma Olomouc.
They were all under the age of 18 and, in the future, British clubs like United will be forced to wait to make their move and risk missing out on those players to other top European sides.
United also brought in teenage wingers Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri but both of those were 18 when they signed and would not be affected by that aspect of the new rules.
Prospects were also signed from other domestic academy setups, with Charlie McNeill joining from Manchester City and Sunderland pair Joe Hugill and Logan Pye making the move to United.
Domestic signings are unaffected by Brexit and it is likely that there will be more movement between British academies as a result.
Clubs will also be restricted to just three overseas signings under the age of 21 from January onwards, and only six foreign players per season moving forwards.
