Man Utd weigh up new contract for Paul Pogba after failed Real Madrid transfer

Manchester United are reportedly in the process of beginning talks with Paul Pogba's agent over a new contract for the midfielder.

The World Cup winner was desperate to quit Old Trafford for pastures new this summer, with Real Madrid believed to be keen on the Frenchman.

However the Spanish giants failed to step up their interest and, after the European transfer window slammed shut on Monday, Pogba was forced to remain with United until at least January.

And according to French outlet L'Equipe , United vice-chairman Ed Woodward has made contact with Pogba's agent, Mino Raiola, to discuss a new deal.

The former Juventus midfielder's current contract runs until 2021 but whether he wants to extend his stay in England remains to be seen.

Despite staying put, Pogba had made clear his desire to depart the Premier League big guns, and was seemingly swaying towards a move to a European rival.

Raiola reiterated Pogba's transfer stance in July when he told The Times: "Everyone knows the willingness of Paul to move on. We are in the process of that. Everyone knows what the feelings of Paul are."

Pogba is desperate to play under Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane but it seems like he may have to wait to seal his dream move, just like Eden Hazard.

The Belgian had been linked with a move to the Bernabeu for a number of years and eventually completed his switch from Chelsea in the summer.

On Thursday his brother Mathias fuelled speculation that Pogba has set his heart on an imminent exit by criticising the current first-team squad at United.

"Paul knows that he cannot leave Manchester United so he’s going to focus on this season," Mathias told El Chiringuito.

"It’s not easy right now, because he has a lot of responsibility in the team. A lot of big players have left.

"The only great player is De Gea, the goalkeeper, which means he’s going to have to put a lot of effort in every game."
