Man Utd warned Dean Henderson will not return to play second fiddle to David de Gea

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said that goalkeeper Dean Henderson will not return to his parent club Manchester United unless he is assured of regular first-team football.

The 22-year-old was first sent on loan to the Blades in 2018, and he starred in the Championship as the Yorkshire team sealed promotion to the Premier League.

He has been just as impressive this season, and was on form again during the narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Tuesday night, making a number of vital saves including from Gabriel Jesus' first-half penalty to keep his side in the game.

With David de Gea having recently signed a new deal with the Red Devils the Spaniard looks like being first choice at Old Trafford for a while yet, and Wilder said Henderson will not accept being a reserve keeper any longer.

"He wants to play first team football," Wilder said. "Maybe I shouldn't be saying this, but I'm not so sure he'll play backup to anybody. Just the character of the boy. Maybe he will come out and say it."

Wilder hinted that a second extension to Henderson's loan deal could be on the cards, with the manager clearly desperate to keep him at Bramall Lane.

"If there is a decision for Manchester United for him to come out to us for another year we will gladly take that up," Wilder continued. "We've already started talking with them, but he's their player and that decision will be taken on behalf of Manchester United about the player. He's been outstanding for us."

Wilder also claimed Henderson could become England's No.1, with a place in the squad for this summer's European Championships looking likely.

He added: "I know there's a pecking order in that England group, but they must be really good goalkeepers getting ahead of him at the moment."
