Man Utd warned Champions League hopes are over if they lose to Chelsea

Mark Bosnich has warned his former side Manchester United that their Champions League hopes are over if they lose to Chelsea in their upcoming Premier League encounter.

United’s goalless draw at home with Wolves just before the winter break leaves them six points behind the Blues.

They’re currently eighth with just 35 points from 25 matches.

In their first game after the winter break, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side travel to Stamford Bridge next Monday as the battle to secure Champions League football next season intensifies.

And Bosnich believes the clash carries huge significance.

The ex-goalkeeper told Sky Sports: “I don’t think it’s win or bust but you could lean towards it being lose or bust.

“I think it’s a must not lose. The gap will be a little bit far to catch up if they lose, but not win or bust no.

“They’re not far off and Chelsea will be looking to this with Tottenham breathing down their necks and they’re at home.

"They both had a week’s break so it will be a very important game for both sides.

“For Chelsea and Frank Lampard they will be looking to get breathing space between them and the chasing sides."

Key injuries to Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay haven’t helped United’s cause.

But the squad has been boosted with the January arrivals of Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo.

The Red Devils have lost more league games than they’ve won since Solskjaer became the permanent manager, leading to speculation about his future.

Bosnich is confident though that his former teammate is leading the club in the right direction.

He added: "In terms of Ole they’re not far off at all and what a physiological boost it would be if they could win at Stamford Bridge, especially given the signing of Bruno Fernandes.

"It’s a massive game for both sides."
