Man Utd urged to complete Dayot Upamecano transfer after Champions League masterclass

Manchester United have been encouraged to sign Dayot Upamecano in the transfer market as they look to plug the gaps in their squad.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer guided the Red Devils to a third place finish in his first full year in charge.

He could still end the season with Europa League glory but is aware of the gulf that remains between them and the Premier League's elite.

Upamecano has played a starring role for an RB Leipzig side that continue to challenge domestically and are in the last four of the Champions League.

The defender was a standout as the Germans shocked Atletico Madrid in the quarter finals earlier this week.

And Ruud Gullit believes the young Frenchman could have a similar affect to Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool if United act quickly.

"What was the first thing Klopp did with Liverpool? He bought a good defence. He bought a goalkeeper and good defenders because everything starts there," he told BeIN Sports

"And I think Man United should start there as well. I saw something amazing with Leipzig and Dayot Upamecano. He was outstanding [against Atletico Madrid].

"He can play football, he’s hard in the tackle. Defence is where I would start if I was Man United."

Do Man Utd need to add another defender this summer? Have your say below

Solskjaer spent a world record amount on a defender last summer when he purchased Harry Maguire from Leicester.

The Englishman is one of five signings made by the United boss as he looks to establish a clear recruitment policy following years of poor business in the transfer window.

Jadon Sancho remains the top target for the Old Trafford chiefs but they may miss out on the Borussia Dortmund man after bypassing the deadline set by the Bundesliga outfit.

United are not actively searching for a new central defender in the coming months with the likes of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly also on their books.
