Man Utd trigger one year option on Matteo Darmian contract despite ongoing Juventus transfer talks

Manchester United have triggered a one-year option on Matteo Darmian’s contract, despite opening negotiations with Juventus over a move for the Italian defender.

Juve want to complete a deal for the versatile full back this month - but United are determined not to let him go on the cheap.

Despite claims in Italy that the Turin giants had offered to take Darmian on loan until the end of season, it’s understood talks so far have not revolved around a short-term deal.

By extending Darmian’s contract by another 12 months, United believe they could comfortably recoup the £12.7m they paid for him in 2015.

At the age of 29 and an Italian international, Darmian could still command a significant fee in the current transfer market.

There is also no great desire to offload player whose professionalism and versatility continues to be valued within Old Trafford.

Darmian’s own determination to return to Italy could be a significant factor - but by triggering his option, United have made it clear they won’t be swayed by sentimentality alone.

Should Juve convince United to agree to a loan deal, it highly likely it would have to be with a view to a permanent transfer.
