Man Utd transfer target Matthijs de Ligt breaks silence on Ajax future

Matthijs de Ligt admits he may have played his last home game for Ajax.

The Dutch defender is a target for Europe's top clubs after a stunning season with the Eredivisie side.

Barcelona are leading the chase for De Ligt with Manchester United also keen, although their failure to secure Champions League football may cost them.

Ajax took a giant step towards winning the title on Sunday as they beat Utrecht 4-1 on Sunday, meaning they will be champions barring a final day miracle.

De Ligt led the celebrations at full-time before being asked if this was his farewell appearance at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

"I don't know yet. There have been conversations, but there is still no agreement," De Ligt said.

Ajax director of football Edwin van der Sar conceded before the Champions League defeat to Tottenham that De Ligt would be on his way this summer.

Frenkie de Jong has already agreed to join Barcelona and it appears De Ligt will follow him to the Nou Camp.

How Man Utd could line up next season after ruthless summer overhaul of squad

"I think these will be de Ligt's final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high," he said.

"He's been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club. I think he'll go to England or Spain."

Manchester United had identified De Ligt as their No.1 defensive target but may well be pipped to his signature.

Leicester defender Harry Maguire is back on their radar, as is Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plots an Old Trafford overhaul.
