Man Utd transfer round-up: Red Devils dealt Cristiano Ronaldo blow, Kieran Trippier progress made

Manchester United are set for an active summer transfer window, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to build a squad to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

The Red Devils finished 12 points adrift of Pep Guardiola ’s side this season, with several weaknesses in the squad needing to be addressed.

One of those areas is in defence, with a high-quality partner for Harry Maguire and competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka needed.

In addition to those areas of need, United have also been linked with a sensational move for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is edging closer to a departure from Juventus.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Manchester United transfer news...

United eyeing Trippier move

Manchester United have made a new right-back one of their priorities for the summer window as they search for competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Though Wan-Bissaka has impressed as the first-choice in the position, it is felt that a more attacking option is needed when United come up against teams playing with a low defensive block.

One option who has long been eyed by United to fill that gap is Kieran Trippier, who won La Liga this season with Atletico Madrid.

Who should Manchester United sign in the summer transfer window? Comment below.

The 30-year-old has impressed under Diego Simeone, becoming Atletico’s first-choice right-back and earning a place in the England squad for Euro 2020.

United did make plans to launch a bid for the Englishman in the January transfer window, but those were halted when Trippier was hit with a suspension for betting infractions.

But now the Manchester Evening News report that United have revived their interest in Trippier and are now “considering” submitting a bid.

Red Devils facing Pau Torres competition

A new centre-back is also on the agenda for the Red Devils, with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof failing to prove they can be quality partners for Harry Maguire.

Though Bailly has been handed a new contract, it is expected he will continue to be a squad player with injuries limiting his participation.

The Europa League final loss to Villarreal also showcased that Lindelof will not be Maguire’s long-term partner.

One man who did impress in that game though was Pau Torres, who has starred under Unai Emery at the Yellow Submarine.

Torres has become one of the highest-rated young defenders in Europe, with United one of the frontrunners for his signature.

But it appears they are facing competition from Italy, with Cittaceleste reporting that Lazio have now joined the race to sign Torres.

Ancelotti appointment deals Ronaldo blow

Carlo Ancelotti’s sensational return to Real Madrid could not just deal a blow to Everton, but also to United’s hopes of signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar appears to be ready to leave Juventus having failed to win a ninth successive Serie A title this season.

United appear to be one of the few teams who could afford to sign Ronaldo and are one of the frontrunners.

It would be a remarkable return to Old Trafford for the 36-year-old, who won three Premier League titles during his first spell in Manchester.

But Ancelotti’s return to Madrid could put a spanner in the works for a move back to United, with the Italian having enjoyed a good relationship with Ronaldo during his first spell at the Bernabeu.

In fact, Corrierre dello Sport suggest that relationship has the potential to 'ruin' United's reunion plans.
