Man Utd transfer news: Red Devils 'prepared to break club record' for defender

Manchester United are prepared to break their club record transfer fee to land a top defender this summer.

According to the Evening Standard , Ed Woodward has given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the all-clear to break their £90m club record transfer fee to get the right man.

Woodward has reportedly accepted they will have to break the bank to improve their defensive problems having missed out in their pursuit of several targets the last couple of transfer windows.

Having seen Virgil van Dijk transform Liverpool's fortunes, the Old Trafford hierarchy have now been convinced spending big on the right centre-back will pay dividends in the long run.

The Red Devils splashed nearly £90m to bring Paul Pogba back to the club but could outdo that fee this summer.

Kalidou Koulibaly has long been touted as a top target, whilst names such as Milan Skriniar and Toby Alderweireld have also been linked.

The Red Devils are also said to be considering reigniting their interest in Harry Maguire having attempted to sign the Leicester and England defender last summer.

Concerns over a £60m valuation saw United end their interest last year, although he has put together another excellent season for the Foxes to impress United scouts.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is continually being monitored but United's failure to qualify for the Champions League could rule him out.

Maguire would bring plenty of Premier League experience to Solskjaer's squad as they look to break back into the top four next season.

Defence has long been seen as a priority for United as they rebuild their struggling squad after a below-part season.
