Man Utd transfer blow as defensive target Milan Skriniar inks new Inter Milan deal

Manchester United have been handed a transfer blow, after Milan Skriniar signed a new contract with Inter Milan.

The Slovenian international centre-back has been tracked extensively by United over the last 12 months.

The 24-year-old was one of United’s top defensive targets as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prepares for a summer overhaul at Old Trafford.

And United had hoped to bring him to the club amid continued frustration with Napoli’s reticence to lower their £90million Kalidou Kolibaly price tag.

But, as Mirror Sport exclusively revealed in March, Skiniar has instead sealed new double-your-money deal with Inter.

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward discusses controversial Champions League changes

The ex-Sampdoria star is settled in Milan and has starred for the Nerazzurri over the last 12 months.

Now he has signed a new four-year deal until 2023.

"I am very happy to have extended the contract with Inter and I am proud to be able to wear this shirt,” said Skriniar.

"I want to thank the company and the fans for the trust they have always given me."

Ed Woodward makes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer vow as Man Utd reveal latest financial results

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has vowed to back Solskjaer in the transfer market this summer - unlike Jose Mourinho last year.

The Portuguese was denied a number of his preferred targets in 2018, ultimately playing a part in United's dismal season.

Speaking to investors on Thursday, Woodward said: "Everyone at the club - the board, the manager, the squad and all the staff are resolute in our desire to get United back to the top of English football, we continually look to improve staff on and off the pitch to achieve this.

"The strength of our business means we have the financial resources to continue to provide backing for the manager and creating success on the pitch.

"This - as ever - remains our number one goal."
