Manchester United should have made a move for the soon-to-be Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney because he's "better than Luke Shaw", according to Charlie Nicholas.
Former Celtic and Arsenal star Nicholas is set to see Tierney join the ranks of those who have played for both clubs, with the Scotland international due at the Emirates for a medical on Thursday's transfer deadline day.
Tierney's arrival is set to feature prominently on a busy day of activity for Arsenal, who are also looking to bring in Chelsea defender David Luiz as Unai Emery remodels his often leaky defence.
But Nicholas has questioned Tierney's decision to join the Gunners.
"Kieran Tierney should be asking himself if this is the right time to join Arsenal ," via the Metro .
"I just don’t see how a left-back is a priority for my old club. Arsenal need a centre-back or even two before they should even be considering a full-back.
"Arsenal are a top-six side but they are probably short of the top four.
"If Tierney goes to the Emirates it will be far from ideal for him with the quality of the other Arsenal defenders."
Emery is set to make changes to his defence this season, with Tierney likely to be a key part of the back-line.
"Tierney will need time to settle and adjust himself but it remains to be seen who he would have around him," said Nicholas.
"Laurent Koscielny wanted out, Shkodran Mustafi needs to be sold and Sokratis has struggled. Outside of that all they have is a lot of promising kids.
"My disappointment for Tierney is that Arsenal are the only big Premier League club that has shown an interest. "I’m surprised Manchester United haven’t come in, because he is a better player than Luke Shaw."
