Man Utd to turn clock back 80 years with away kit for next season

Manchester United are set to turn the clock back more than 80 years next season with a black and white striped away kit.

It is understood that designers at sportswear giants adidas have been inspired by a hooped shirt first worn by the Old Trafford club in 1936.

The 2020 version could also be seen to tipping a nod to the iconic black and white shirt of the 1970s, designed by Admiral, which incorporated three black stripes running vertically on a white shirt from the left shoulder.

The shirt was worn from 1975 to 1980 and is heavily linked to United's three FA Cup final appearances during that era.

An insider said: “Shirt designers are always looking at ways to pay their respect to the club's past.

“Black and white have always featured heavily in United's home and away kits so it will also fit in with the club's tradition.”

United's fortunes did not prosper when they first wore an away kit that consisted on a black and white hooped shirt, black shorts and black socks with red and white tops during the inter-war years.

They were relegated in 1937 and ditched the shirt 12 months later despite winning promotion at the first attempt.

United's current away kit for the 2019/20 season has a shade of gold, although they are yet to wear the reverse strip on the road.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men wore their black third kit in the 1-1 draw with Southampton before the international break.
