Man Utd to release Newport County loanee Regan Poole

Regan Poole is to be released by Manchester United.

The Wales under-21 international has been on loan at Newport County since January and is currently preparing for their League Two play-off final with Tranmere Rovers, but will now be on the lookout for a new club this summer.

A departure from Old Trafford has been on the cards for some time for Poole, who despite shining for United's reserve side has struggled to break into the first team set-up.

Poole joined United from Newport four years ago in a deal believed to be worth around £100,000, after previously becoming the Exiles' youngest ever player when he made his debut aged 16 and 94 days.

He eventually made his first team debut for United in the 5-1 Europa League win over Danish outfit Midtjylland in February 2016. However, he's not made a single senior appearance since, and is now set to leave the club when his current contract expires this summer.

It's understood that several EFL clubs have already shown an interest in making a move for the 20-year old, but the player is currently focused on County and their bid for an unlikely promotion to League One.

It remains to be seen whether Newport, or indeed the player himself, would be interested in a permanent move to Rodney Parade this summer, although Michael Flynn has made little secret of his admiration for the youngster.

Shortly after confirming his move back to the Exiles, County boss Flynn said: "He is a player I know well having brought him through the academy ranks during my time as academy manager, I knew then of the tremendous qualities Regan has to offer.

"These will be invaluable to the team in the second half of the season. It's a positive for the club that we have been able to sign a player from Manchester United."
