Man Utd to refund season ticket holders to tune of £6m if games go behind closed doors

Manchester United has confirmed it will refund season ticket holders if the season is cancelled or remaining games are played behind closed doors.

United announced the measure this morning, meaning season ticket holders are in line for a refund, with the potential bill potentially totalling £6million.

In the event of games not going ahead or being played behind closed doors, season ticket holders will be offered either a pro-rata rebate against their season tickets for next year, or a pro-rata cash refund based on the number of matches still to be played.

This rebate or a refund will also apply to supporters who have paid in advance for general admission tickets or matchday VIP packages for the games concerned, as well as seasonal Executive Club members.

United have four Premier League home left to fulfil this season, as well as the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie with LASK Linz, as well as any future ties, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side leading 5-0 after the first leg.

In the same announcement, United have also agreed to suspend the date for season ticket renewals, which was originally May 1. A new deadline will be put in place once there is confirmation of the start date of the 2020-21 season.

Richard Arnold, United Group Managing Director, said: “We appreciate the patience and the support we have had from our fans throughout this challenging time and welcome the constructive discussions we have had with MUST and fan representatives.

“We know our fans will not want to miss any games played in the coming months and will be disappointed if that is to be the case, but clearly we must all play our part in the efforts to combat coronavirus.

“By pushing the season ticket renewal deadline back and confirming our policy if games were to be cancelled or played behind closed doors, we want to ease any concerns our loyal fans may have in the current circumstances.

“They give Manchester United their support year after year, and at this time, we are committed to supporting them. Our message to them is clear – we are all in this together.

“We will continue to keep fans updated with any developments and in the meantime we encourage them to keep following the latest health advice and Government guidelines.”
