Man Utd to offer Dean Henderson 'bumper new deal' to warn off suitors

Manchester United are sensationally set to offer goalkeeper Dean Henderson a new deal worth over £100,000-a-week despite him not ever starting for the side.

United are looking to give Henderson, who is currently on loan at Sheffield United, a new bumper deal, as to keep away interested party Chelsea , according to a report in The Sun.

The Red Devils see the 23-year-old as their future number one and so do not want to sell the player just yet, especially as the usually exemplary David De Gea has provided some mixed performances this season.

Premier League rivals Chelsea are reportedly willing to go as high as £50million for the keeper - and so United will be hoping to tie him down to a contract as soon as possible.

Henderson already has two more years on his contract, while this fresh offer will be his fourth with the Red Devils.

Sheffield, though, are keen on keeping hold of the goalie for a third season on loan.

It comes as Owen Hargreaves has come out in defence of United's midfielder Fred, saying the Brazilian was misunderstood when he arrived at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old was United's marquee signing when he transferred from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, however he failed to live up to expectations for most, only coming into his own since Paul Pogba was sidelined with an ankle injury on Boxing Day.

And former England international Hargreaves was full of praise for the talisman.

He told Premier League productions : “He’s a complete midfield player but if he can add goals to his game then he’ll be the perfect midfield player."

“In possession he’s very good, out of possession he’s really aggressive and now the players around him are functioning which is a really good sign.

“I think because they paid £50m for Fred and he’s Brazilian that people thought he was a No.10 but he isn’t.

“He’s not a goalscorer and he’s not really creative but what he is is a really good midfield player.
