Man Utd to make David De Gea highest-paid goalkeeper in the world

Manchester United are set to make David De Gea the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world after a breakthrough in talks to hand the Spaniard a new deal.

De Gea is set to commit the best years of his career to United after protracted negotiations - drawn out over the last two years - edged towards a conclusion in recent days.

The Spain international had been holding out for a deal on parity with Alexis Sanchez’ £450,000-a-week – but it looks like a compromise has now been reached.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed United are close to agreeing a new contract with David de Gea during the first leg of the club's pre-season tour to Australia and the Far East.

He said: “Hopefully we can agree with David, as I’ve said a few times. That’ll be up to the club and David to announce when that happens.”

Chief negotiator Matt Judge has continued talks with De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes throughout the summer as part of a strategic drive to tie down the futures of a host of key players.

Marcus Rashford has signed a four-year deal worth around £200,000-a-week, with Juan Mata also being handed a two-year extension.

United also want to press ahead with talks over a new deal for Paul Pogba if he can be convinced to drop his attempts to secure a move to Real Madrid.
