Man Utd target Matthijs de Ligt drops transfer hint on Instagram

Matthijs de Ligt could have dropped a sly transfer hint with his latest Instagram activity.

The Ajax defender is due back in pre-season training on Monday without his expected move away from Amsterdam confirmed.

Juventus had appeared to be leading the race for his signature earlier this window, but as the saga drags on, it gives Manchester United, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain hope of securing a deal.

While De Ligt has been coy on his future, he has appeared to drop a hint about where his future lies with his latest stint on Instagram.

The 19-year-old centre-back has liked a post from Cristiano Ronaldo - a potential future team-mate at Juventus.

It is not the first time that Ronaldo and De Ligt have had small interactions regarding his future, either.

During the UEFA Nations League this summer, De Ligt was told by Ronaldo that Juventus is the club he should be signing for.

Speaking to Dutch publication NOS, the Dutchman confirmed that his rival spoke to him following the final between the Netherlands and Portugal.

De Ligt was questioned afterwards about what Ronaldo had told him - and if he hinted at a move to Juve.

"That could well be true," said De Ligt. "What I answered? I didn't understand him at first. So I said… no, I didn't say anything."

De Ligt added: "I was a bit shocked, that's why I laughed. But I didn't say anything. Just after the game you just feel bad that you've lost, that’s all you're thinking about."

Meanwhile, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has refused to rule out the possibility De Ligt could yet join their club.

When asked about the player he said: "I have known where De Ligt will play [next season] for a long time. I still know but I cannot say anything else."

Barcelona have already completed the signing of De Ligt's Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong in a €55m deal, and it had appeared almost inevitable that De Ligt would follow the midfielder to the Nou Camp.

But he was then linked with a whole host of other top European clubs, including Manchester United , Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, and it was thought he had chosen the latter as his preferred club.
