Free agent Zinedine Zidane's reasons for rejecting Man Utd role

Zinedine Zidane has no interest in taking over at Manchester United, according to reports.

The World Cup winner has led Los Blancos in two separate stints, with his most recent one coming to an end in the summer, meaning he is readily available.

Zidane masterminded Madrid's three successive Champions League triumphs from 2016 to 2018 and also captured the LaLiga title in 2017.

Upon his return he was again able to deliver league success in Spain, even if he struggled in Europe with an ageing side.

Mundo Deportivo claim that Zidane has no plans to take up a new role anytime soon - although United are set to stick by Solskjaer.

The reports adds that the 1998 Ballon d'Or winner is ‘recharging his batteries’ following the intensity of the role at the Bernabeu.

Zidane spent just shy of five years in charge across two spells - the longest time in the dugout for any Madrid manager since the 1970s.

The only jobs that would appeal to the 49-year-old would be the French national role or at PSG, both of which would allow him to return to his homeland.

Pressure is mounting on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Sunday's 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Questions have long been asked about the Norwegian's suitability for the role as United look to challenge for the Premier League once more.

The humiliating defeat comes amid a poor run of form with the Red Devils now eight points off domestic pacesetters Chelsea.

Zidane is one man linked with the United role as is former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, who is also available having left Inter Milan in the summer.

The Italian is open to discussing being Solskjaer's successor, even if his appointment could come at hefty price and potentially irritate Cristiano Ronaldo.

For the moment however it looks as if United will stand by Solskjaer with games to come against Tottenham, Atalanta and Manchester City.

The Norwegian maintained after the Liverpool defeat that he was the right man to take the club forward.

"I do believe in myself, I do believe that I am getting close to what I want with the club," he told Sky Sports.

"I think what we've done, what I've seen, the development, of course, the results lately haven't been good enough.

"But I've got to keep strong and I do believe in what we've been doing, the coaching staff and the players."

Solskjaer has been afforded time and money during his tenure at Old Trafford but so far has little to show for it.

It is accepted that the club's former player has improved this United side, but as they attempt to take the next step questions are being asked.

City, Liverpool and Chelsea all employ top class managers and that is seen as a major point of difference between the Red Devils and their rivals.
