Man Utd talisman Bruno Fernandes responds to PFA Player of the Year award hype

Bruno Fernandes has played down talk of him winning this season's PFA Player of the Year award, insisting success with Man Utd comes first.

The Portuguese midfielder is one of the early front runners for the individual accolade following an impressive start to the 2020/21 campaign.

Fernandes has the second-highest tally of combined goals and assists in the top flight so far, behind only Tottenham's Harry Kane.

But while United's talisman is on course to at least be one of the nominees for the trophy, he feels United's performance as a team will determine whether it's his name announced as the winner.

"If we win trophies, it is the most important thing,' Fernandes told MUTV.

"Of course, it's good for a player to win individual awards and I will never say I don't want to be the best player in the league or I don't want to be the PFA Player of the Season. I want to be [that] but I want to be [that] if the team wins trophies.

"If the team does win trophies, for me, it's the same. For me, the most important thing is to help my team-mates to also be Player of the Season.

"That's the most important thing because, if someone from the club is Player of the Season, it means that we do very, very well this season."

United have given themselves a decent chance of lifting some silverware as the season approaches its halfway point.

The Red Devils are just three points off league leaders Liverpool with a game in hand, and also have a cup semi-final to come.

Keeping Fernandes fit and on song will be key to their prospects, particularly with a top of the table showdown to come in January.

But the 26-year-old is adamant any special recognition he receives is a product of the team environment which has helped him thrive at Old Trafford.

"I think we will always be happy if someone else takes an individual award because it means the team is doing well," he added. "Nobody in football, a team sport, wins an individual trophy just doing well himself.

"You have to do well but you have to have the help of your team-mates to do well. When you have an individual trophy, of course, you are doing really well and deserve the credit but that credit goes to the team because they help you do better and better."
