Man Utd 'still in market' for Bruno Fernandes but face battle to get transfer done

Manchester United have reportedly not given up hope of signing Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal midfielder has been linked with United throughout the summer but initial interest was not followed up with a bid.

Tottenham made a late attempt to land Fernandes, making several approaches to Sporting Lisbon for the midfielder.

Sporting had demanded £65m (€70m) for Fernandes with Tottenham eyeing an attacking midfielder before the transfer window closes.

But while Tottenham's offer of £41m up front, plus £24m in add-ons, met Sporting's asking price, it was not enough.

Tottenham have now switched their focus to Giovano Lo Celso at Real Betis and are close to agreeing a deal for the Argentine.

And O Jogo states Manchester United could yet revive their interest in Fernandes.

While a move to Old Trafford remains a possibility with United in the market for another quality addition, Portuguese sources are losing confidence a deal can be agreed before 5pm.

Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon have reportedly drafted in super-agent Jorge Mendes in an attempt to broker a deal for their captain.

Mendes is not Fernandes' agent but the player wants a move to happen, although he can join clubs outside of England after Thursday's deadline.

It is claimed Fernandes has a clause in his contract that entitles him to compensation and a pay rise, if an offer of more than £30m (€35m) is rejected.

There is of course a chance Fernandes won't accept the compensation but a bumper new contract could be on the cards if he remains with Sporting.
