Man Utd star Fred becomes latest player targeted by vile racist abuse on Instagram

Manchester United midfielder Fred was targeted with horrendous racist abuse on social media after his side's FA Cup exit at the hands of Leicester City.

The Red Devils were beaten 3-1 in their quarter-final at the King Power Stadium, with Fred's misplaced pass at fault for Kelechi Iheanacho's opening goal in the first half.

The Brazilian was later sent vile abuse on his Instagram page including monkey emojis.

That's according to the Daily Telegraph , which adds United reaffirmed their zero-tolerance stance on racism by condemning those responsible.

Fred is the latest in a long line of players to receive awful abuse online.

His Old Trafford teammates Anthony Martial, Axel Tuanzebe and Marcus Rashford have also been targeted this season, along with Chelsea's Reece James and his sister, Manchester United Women midfielder Lauren James.

In response to the sickening abuse, social media companies have come under increasing pressure to introduce harsher punishment for perpetrators and the Football Association led a letter demanding action be taken.

The FA’s equality and diversity director, Edleen John, recently called for more support from the police and Crown Prosecution Service to tackle the problem of online abuse.

Meanwhile, Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham last month described trolling as the "biggest problem" facing football.

After his side's defeat at Leicester, Solskjaer insisted he would not "point fingers" at Fred for his error.

The 28-year-old's back-pass presented Iheanacho a simple chance to open the scoring, but Solskjaer said: “When you win we win together, when we lose we do it together. We are not going to point fingers or blame.

“We want to build from the back, we want the players to be confident, sometimes it doesn't work and the first goal was a time it didn't.”
