Man Utd star Edinson Cavani gives telling response to Premier League's international ban

Edinson Cavani has hit out at Premier League clubs' decision to ban players from travelling to red-list countries to represent their national teams.

Top-flight sides reached the verdict ahead of the September international break over fears players would miss games for their clubs due to spending lengthy periods in quarantine.

Many South American nations are on the UK's red list, including Cavani's native Uruguay. The 20 clubs' decision means the veteran striker will miss World Cup qualifiers against Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

The 34-year-old is clearly unhappy about this and took to Instagram to voice his opposition to the deviation from FIFA protocol.

Cavani shared a screenshot of the Premier League's statement and simply added three question mark emojis.

The Premier League confirmed the decision of their clubs on Tuesday evening and claimed they had been unable to obtain a quarantine exemption for players who would have travelled to and from red-list countries.

"The clubs' decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window," reads the statement.

"This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

"Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

"If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

"This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

The decision means Cavani will need to wait to earn his 124th cap for Uruguay, although the Premier League is unhappy with CONMEBOL and it remains to be seen if he will return home for October's internationals.

South American football's governing body has chosen to extend September and October's international breaks from nine days to 11 days.

The Premier League statement adds: "Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

"This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

"FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue."
