Man Utd squad jet off to Norwich as Ralf Rangnick makes transfer plea

Manchester United will welcome back a number of their first-team stars on Saturday as they head down to face Norwich City in the Premier League.

Ralf Rangnick rested some of the bigger names in his squad during the midweek game against Young Boys as United completed their Champions League group stage campaign with a draw thanks to Mason Greenwood's opener.

Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to face the Premier League's bottom side, with Rangnick hoping to continue his perfect league record as United manager, and the likes of captain Harry Maguire were seen making their way to the airport.

The game comes as the interim manager sets out his stall for what could be a busy January transfer window.

United started with Maguire and Victor Lindelof in Rangnick's first game in charge last weekend, and the Swede was another spotted making his way to the airport after getting a rest in midweek.

Senior centre-back Raphael Varane has been missing since early November, but has returned to training as he closes in on a return.

There are also injury and illness doubts over Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nemanja Matic, who started in defence against Young Boys.

Rangnick has reportedly set his sights on a number of possible targets ahead of the window opening, after admitting he has got to know his squad a little better in the last week.

One of the players to have seemingly impressed the manager is Anthony Elanga, with the teenager part of the squad again after coming on against Palace and starting in midweek.

"It’s still too early to speak about what might happen in the winter transfer window," he said, with the club potentially preparing for the departure of forward Anthony Martial.

"If I look at the number of players we have, it’s still a big squad, we definitely do not have not enough players."

The game against Young Boys saw Luke Shaw return to action for the first time since November after suffering a concussion.

England defender Shaw was a regular last season, but his absence has allowed Alex Telles to stake his claim for a run in the side.

The Brazilian was seen leaving the team bus and making his way towards the airport.

Fred was also present, luggage in hand, having been given a break after his goalscoring exploits against Palace.

The former Shakhtar midfielder scored his second goal of the season to secure victory against Patrick Vieira's side, and has featured regularly for club and country this season.

"I had to ask my assistant coach if that was Fred's right foot," Rangnick had joked after the late winner at Old Trafford last weekend.

United go into this weekend's games in sixth place, three points outside the Champions League spots.

With fourth place West Ham United playing on Sunday and fifth place Tottenham seeing their game against Brighton postponed after a Covid outbreak, Rangnick's side have an opportunity to put pressure on the teams above them.

Their opponents are coming off a 3-0 loss at Spurs, but were unbeaten in four before that with new manager Dean Smith making an early impact.
