Man Utd shelve left-back transfer plan due to emergence of Brandon Williams

Manchester United have shelved their plans to sign a left-back after the emergence of Brandon Williams.

Williams, 19, has become a key figure under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and scored his first goal for the club against Sheffield United on Sunday.

The left-back's form has even seen him overtake Luke Shaw as Solskjaer's first choice left-back at Old Trafford.

Shaw will get a chance to stake a claim in the Europa League clash with Astana, with Williams among the first-team players left at home.

Solskjaer planned to bring in a full-back to provide competition for Shaw but those plans have now been changed.

United are still likely to be in the mix for additions in January with a midfielder and forward remaining on Solskjaer's list of priorities.

Shaw is one of few experienced players set to start, with Lee Grant and Jesse Lingard making the 3,000 mile trip.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer has confirmed four debutants set to start in the clash in Kazakhstan.

When quizzed on who will be in his starting XI at a press conference on Wednesday, Solskjaer said: "It’s Lee [Grant], you’ll see [Ethan] Laird, [Di'Shon]Bernard and [Dylan] Levitt from the start so you’ll definitely get a few.

"We have some young players. If they’re going to learn to play this games I think it’s a great start for them.

"Not expecting them to dominate but we should compete and challenge."
