Man Utd 'settle on Brendan Rodgers plan' with timeline to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Brendan Rodgers remains Manchester United's ideal choice to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

The Northern Irishman has led Leicester impressively since taking over almost three years ago.

Solskjaer meanwhile, now into his third full season as United boss, is struggling to put the pieces together following a summer of substantial investment.

As a result Rodgers is being eyed as his replacement, but any move is unlikely to take place until the season is over, reports the Manchester Evening News.

United chiefs have privately decided that a change in the dugout is needed after humiliating defeats at the hands of Liverpool and Manchester City.

But due to the lack of readily available replacements they are reluctant to axe Solskjaer midway through the season.

Already United are out of the Carabao Cup and their top four credentials are being questioned amid a poor run of form, which has left them nine points adrift of pacesetters Chelsea.

Getting Rodgers out of Leicester would require the Red Devils to negotiate a fee with the Foxes, which can be a challenge during a campaign.

Solskjaer, who only signed a three-year deal in the summer, would also be due a compensation package.

The Norwegian saw his side lose to Rodgers' Leicester last month whilst they also knocked them out of the FA Cup last term.

United have recruited steadily in recent years but went heavy in the summer with Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho all arriving.

However, despite Ronaldo coming up with some crucial late goals, performances have been well below par and, in the case of Sancho, he has been unable to reproduce his best form.

Solskjaer's chopping and changing of system is seen by many as a desperate act to revive his team's fortunes, especially as the tweaks go against the free-flowing philosophy he has tried to implement, something he admitted.

The United boss was quizzed on whether he was on borrowed time after the Manchester derby defeat.

"No, I don't start to feel like that," he told Sky Sports.

"I have good communication all the time with the club that's very up-front and honest about the situation."

United's last three permanent managers have all been sacked, dating back to Sir Alex Ferguson's successor David Moyes.

The Scot was given the majority of the season before being shown the door four games from the end.

Louis van Gaal saw out two seasons, with his last game being the FA Cup final in 2016 which United won, nevertheless he wasn't enough to save him.

Jose Mourinho was the only man to be sacked midseason with his marching orders coming in December 2018.

Solskjaer was named as his interim replacement before being handed the job permanently.
