Man Utd 'set to rival City' for Pep Guardiola's No.1 transfer target

Manchester United are reportedly ready to battle it out with rivals City for Saul Niguez.

Mirror Sport reported the Atletico Madrid midfielder had emerged as Pep Guardiola's No.1 transfer target this summer.

Atletico have slapped a £130m buy-out clause on Saul, who has been identified as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho at the Etihad.

But there are suggestions Atletico would be open to selling the Spain international for around £80m, with Barcelona also keen.

United have now entered the race with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking for midfield reinforcements this summer, reports ESPN.

United have scouted Saul for some time with the 24-year-old seen as a possible replacement for Ander Herrera.

PSG remain interested in the Spaniard, who is out of contract at Old Trafford this summer.

Solskjaer is likely to be given funds to strengthen after being confirmed as United's permanent boss, with a right-back, central defender and wide attacker on his wishlist.

City could switch their attention to Saul's teammate Rodri as a possible cheaper alternative.

The 22-year-old has impressed in a deeper holding midfield role and has already been likened to Sergio Busquets.

Rodri, who was heavily linked with Barca last summer before joining Atletico, has a release clause of £60m.
