Man Utd set new Premier League goalscoring record in win over Aston Villa

Manchester United achieved something that no side in Premier League history has done before on Thursday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side saw off relegation-threatened Aston Villa 3-0 at Villa Park to move within a point of the top four, and in doing so they set a goalscoring record that not even Sir Alex Ferguson's great teams of the past could manage.

United's victory was a fourth successive win by three or more goals, making Solskjaer's vintage the first side in the Premier League era to go on such a run of convincing victories.

Indeed, the Red Devils have won all of their last four games by a three-goal margin, beating Sheffield United, Brighton and now Villa 3-0, as well as Bournemouth 5-2 last Saturday.

The last top-flight team to go on such a run was Liverpool back in 1987, and Solskjaer was delighted with his side as they saw off Dean Smith's men thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty and strikes from Mason Greenwood and Paul Pogba.

“We should have won by five clear goals in all of them!" he told the United website when informed of the record.

"I’m surprised by that stat, but we should have had so many more goals. We’re keeping clean sheets, which is great and I think we could have had a few more the other way.

”I think we could have scored many, many more goals and we're keeping clean sheets.

"Of course we just keep going into every game wanting to win. If you win 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, it doesn’t matter if we get the points.

"But hopefully the goal difference won’t be the deciding factor at the end, because we should have had 10 more goals in the last two games.”
