Man Utd's view on Harry Maguire captaincy after guilty verdict in Greek court

Manchester United currently have no intention of stripping Harry Maguire of the club captaincy despite him being found guilty of several offences in Greece.

The 27-year-old defender was handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence after a court found him guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery following a brawl on a night out in Mykonos.

Maguire had been included in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches but was promptly dropped as news of the verdict filtered back to the UK.

He is now set for showdown talks with United chiefs but his captaincy is not thought to be at any immediate risk.

As per the MEN's report, United have offered their backing to Maguire while Sky Sports add the club remain optimistic of a successful appeal.

Maguire's lawyers had asked for the trial to be postponed after new evidence came to light which they only received the night before the hearing began in Syros.

Alexandros Anagnostakis, who is representing the United star, claimed he had obtained video footage from outside Mykonos police station of Maguire and his co-defendants being “mistreated” by officers.

A statement released after the verdict by the club read: "Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty to all of the misdemeanour charges made against him and he continues to strongly assert his innocence.

"It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed the charges and provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defence team minimal time to digest them and prepare.

"A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied.

"On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire’s legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date."

England boss Southgate had also backed Maguire earlier on Tuesday when naming his initial squad, stating the defender had his own story to tell which will come to light in time.

Maguire posted on Instagram after news of his verdict and his subsequent axe from the England squad broke, as he uploaded a picture of a quote which said: "Three things cannot be hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth."

He also continues to fight to clear his name, declaring: "I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter - if anything myself, family and friends are the victims."
