Manchester United 's sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will prove costly - in more ways than one.
The Red Devils dismissed Solskjaer on Sunday morning in the wake of the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road.
The Norwegian spent three trophyless years at the Old Trafford helm and United are now on the lookout for their next manager as they continue to struggle in the post Sir Alex Ferguson era.
United enjoyed unprecedented levels of stability and dominance under the legendary Scot but have failed to mount a serious title challenge since his exit.
Four managers have permanently been appointed and then dismissed and these failures have also proven costly on a financial level at the club.

Solskjaer was the latest manager to say his goodbyes at Carrington after Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes.
And his payout now means the club have spent a staggering £38m on sacking managers since Ferguson's retirement eight years ago.
The Sun reports that Solskjaer will earn a £7.5m compensation package for leaving his dream job after signing a new three-year contract in July.
That equates to just more than the £7m Moyes earned for his brief ill-fated tenure at the club.
Moyes lasted just 10 months of a six-year United contract and the Ferguson succession plan has leapt from one error to another.
Van Gaal was sacked the day after he won the FA Cup for United after his failure to keep the club in the Champions League places.
The Dutchman, now back in charge of the Netherlands national team, earned a handsome £8.4m payout in May 2016.
But it was Mourinho, the man who was supposed to guarantee success at Old Trafford, who proved to be the most costly mistake.
The Portuguese boss won a League Cup and Europa League during his time in charge but things soon turned toxic and he was inevitably removed in December 2018 as form deteriorated.
But there was good news for Mourinho as he earned an incredible £15m payout for his dismissal.
United's £38m payout for sacked managers over the past decade is more than the transfer fee paid for Real Madrid's four-time Champions League winner Raphael Varane.
The kingmakers at Old Trafford now have two different managerial hunts underway as they look to appoint an interim manager before settling on a permanent boss.
The Red Devils have confirmed that Michael Carrick will take charge for the Champions League trip to Villarreal before an interim is named until the end of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers are among the early favourites for the full-time position.
And the club will be desperate to get their decision right this time round as they look to avoid making another costly managerial mistake.
