Man Utd's staggering goal drought from open play after Manchester derby loss

All is not well at Manchester United. Again.

The Red Devils' season seems to have been one taking place over three acts, as they began by underwhelming under Jose Mourinho, then enjoyed an initial resurgence under the interim stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and are now back in the doldrums again following the permanent appointment of the Norwegian.

Solskjaer's side lost for the seventh time in the last nine games when they went down 2-0 to Manchester City in Wednesday night's Manchester derby at Old Trafford, with the visitors striking twice in the second half through Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane.

The run of defeats have seen them exit the Champions League in the quarter-final stage to Barcelona and drop to sixth in the Premier League, although the form of the other top four contenders is helping them out somewhat.

But it will be his own side's form in front of goal which will be of the biggest concern to Solskjaer.

Wednesday's loss was the fourth time in the last five games than United have failed to score, and when it comes to open play goals their record is even worse.

United's only win in their last six was the 2-1 success over West Ham at Old Trafford on April 13, which was achieved thanks to two Paul Pogba penalties.

You have to go all the way back to April 2 for their most recent goal from open play, which come through Scott McTominay against Wolves at Molineux. The Scottish international put United 1-0 up, but they lost 2-1.

All in all, that means United have played 8 hours and 47 minutes of football without finding the back of the net from open play, a run they'll be desperate to see end when they host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.
