Man Utd's 'next Michael Carrick' and "special" Teden Mengi both set for Championship loan moves

Manchester United look likely to send promising youngsters James Garner and Teden Mengi out on loan.

Both spent the second half of last term in the East Midlands - midfielder Garner was at Nottingham Forest, with defender Mengi loaned out to Derby County.

And both are being touted for potential returns to the Championship this season.

Garner has been labelled the "next Michael Carrick" by United chief Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the past.

He left a noticeable mark on his manager when handed his senior debut in added time in a Premier League game against Crystal Palace as a 17-year-old in February 2019.

"I believe he's got the chance to have a great future," Solskjaer said. "He knows we believe in him, we've got great faith in him as the next Michael Carrick.

“I know he's young and I know it's not fair on kids to compare to great players like Michael was, but he's the same mould, he plays simple passes, plays through the lines.”

As for Mengi, Solskjaer has also given him a favourable comparison - Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt.

"Teden has definitely impressed me," Solskjaer said last September.

“It’s different trusting defenders on the big stage, of course it is.

"You’ve got to make sure he’s ready for it, you see examples of Ajax, who play in a different league but Matthijs de Ligt, they made him captain when he was 18. You can see something special in them.

“Teden’s got something special in him. It’s about picking the right moment to give him a chance."

Mengi played nine times for Derby after joining earlier this year, whilst Garner impressed at Forest after a forgetful spell at Watford in the first half of 2020-21.

Garner has entered the last year of his contract but United have the option of an additional year. Mengi is under contract until 2024.
