Man Utd's Mason Greenwood reacts to starboy nickname and breaking Wayne Rooney record

Mason Greenwood has revealed how he feels about his 'starboy' nickname that the Manchester United faithful have given him.

The 19-year-old is United's latest academy graduate to excel in the first-team, going from strength to strength for the Reds under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since his outstanding breakout 2019/20 campaign, in which Greenwood scored 19 goals.

While Greenwood initially struggled for form in front of goal this season, the youngster has ended the season strongly, and his goals, alongside Edinson Cavani 's stellar contribution, have proved crucial towards United consolidating their league runners-up position.

Seemingly every Greenwood goal sends United supporters into a frenzy on social media, but how does he feel about his 'starboy' nickname? "I don't really mind it, to be honest with you (laughs). I just concentrate on my football," Greenwood said to PA.

"I'm still a kid who's having fun playing for United, playing for my boyhood club with many, many great players around me."

It's not a surprise to see Greenwood explain he's having 'fun' playing for United, though, as he's now United's all-time leading teenage goalscorer, with his goal against Aston Villa on May 9 ensuring he surpassed Wayne Rooney, who previously held the record.

"With the goals now that Rooney scored when he was a teenager, maybe overtaking him in the Premier League (in terms of goals scored by a teenager at United) maybe can start something huge for me at this club," Greenwood added.

“Hopefully I can carry on scoring for many, many years and obviously winning trophies here. That's what I always wanted to do."
