Man Utd's Class of '92 glory in Salford City's promotion to Football League

Salford City have earned promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history with a 3-0 victory over AFC Fylde in front of co-owners David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and the Neville brothers at Wembley.

The Manchester United Class of 92 quintet - who all own 10 per cent of the club along with former United teammate Paul Scholes, with 40 per cent owned by businessman Peter Lim, who was also present - watched on in delight as Graham Alexander's side dominated the game against their north-west rivals.

Salford took the lead in the 15th minute when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe slotted home from close range after Fylde had failed to deal with Devonte Redmond's free-kick, which eventually struck Luke Burke in the face before falling to the Salford man.

Dave Challinor's Fylde - who like Salford have enjoyed a rapid rise up the football pyramid in recent years - worked hard to get back into the game, but they were kept at arm's length by a well-organised Salford side.

Salford grabbed a deserved second early in the second half when defender Carl Piergianni rose to head home his 12th goal of the season from a corner that had initially been played short.

Promotion to League Two for next season was then virtually secured when full-back Ibou Touray's cross from the left evaded everyone before bouncing in off a post.

Salford join Leyton Orient in gaining promotion to the Football League for the 2019/20 campaign, which will be a first of league football since their inception as Salford Central in 1940.

The elevation marks the biggest achievement yet in the co-ownership of the Class of 92, who completed a takeover in March 2014 when the club were in the Premier League Division North.

Beckham announced his involvement in January this year.
