Man Utd's chances of signing Ruben Neves as Wolves eye Renato Sanches transfer

Manchester United's need for a midfielder in the traditional 'number six' role was never more obvious than last weekend's 1-0 win at Wolves.

Ironically, the most suitable candidate was present - donning a Wolves shirt in the form of Ruben Neves, who was a constant thorn in United's sides throughout the clash.

United's Fred has often come in for criticism for his inability to provide the backline he plays in front of with much security and it was exhibited at the Molineux again on Sunday.

The Red Devils aren’t necessarily in desperate need for a tough-tackling, takes no prisoners kind of middle man – just someone who offers far more composure than their current options, something Neves has in abundance.

While Fred was struggling to get to grips with the threat of Adama Traore, Neves was spraying key passes and operating as a springboard for Wolves attacks - recycling the ball time and time again.

However, despite recently being tipped as 2/1 favourites to secure his signature, United's hopes of signing Neves appear to have been all but quashed as the Athletic report Wolves are not anticipating his departure less than 12 hours from the window's close.

They did concede that a huge bid from United may change that, but given the lack of time to find a permanent replacement - it would take a mammoth fee to tempt Wolves hand.

Bruno Lage's side are also aiming to do some deadline day business of their own as they hope to secure a loan move for Lille midfielder Renato Sanches.

Sanches was one of the stand-out performers at Euro 2020, impressing as Portugal crashed out at the round of 16 stage.

As is often the case with Sanches, it was his performances for country rather than club that have sparked the attention of clubs across Europe, but Wolves are confident they can entice him to the Molineux to join their ever growing Portuguese contingent.

The 24-year-old has the advantage of already boasting Premier League experience after he endured a tricky loan spell with former Prem outfit Swansea City.

Sanches struggled to make an impact during his time with the Swans, but should he join Wolves, albeit on loan, he will return to the league a far more well-rounded player.

Should Neves become a last-minute departure, Sanches would provide more than capable stand-in for the remainder of the season.
