Manchester United have no intention of allowing Brandon Williams to leave on loan before today's 11pm transfer deadline.
Southampton are understood to have enquired about taking Williams on loan, with United signing Porto left-back Alex Telles in a £15m deal.
That will leave United with three left-backs in Telles, Shaw and Williams, which could have left the latter surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
But United insist Wiliams is going nowhere, with the 20-year-old's versatility - he can also provide cover at right-back - being seen as one of the key reasons for keeping him.
Telles is currently undergoing a medical in Manchester ahead of his £13.5million move.
The left-back will sign a four-year deal with an option for an extra year, and will provide competition for Luke Shaw and Williams.
Edinson Cavani is also set to join before the deadline on a free transfer after he left Paris Saint-Germain.
But United legend Gary Neville - who has been an outspoken critic of the club's transfer strategy - is unconvinced by the Uruguayan's arrival.
"I think my emotion yesterday when I heard was the feeling I probably had when Radamel Falcao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, or Odion Ighalo signed.
"It’s very last minute, came out of nowhere. There’s an element of thrill to it, intrigue, excitement, because he’s one of the world’s great strikers over the last 10 years and you hope he can set the Premier League on fire.
"There’s an element also of how have we ended up here."
