Man Utd's Adrien Rabiot transfer stuck in four-team chain as Edinson Cavani closes on return

All five of Europe's big leagues have now returned to match action but many of the clubs in the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga are still keen to strengthen their squads before the transfer window closes.

Major deals involving Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester United are still be completed with the top coaches keen to bring in fresh faces to enable them to compete in their domestic league and in European competitions.

Mirror Sport has rounded up the best of the transfer news, rumours and gossip from around continental Europe as deadline day edges ever closer.

Rabiot deal stuck in transfer chain

Manchester United have agreed to sign France midfielder Adrien Rabiot for £15m from Juventus but Gazzetta dello Sport reports transfer is stuck in a chain dependent on other deals going through.

The Italian club first want to take Argentine Leandro Paredes from Paris Saint-Germain as a replacement for Rabiot. And PSG have lined up Napoli’s Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz.

Napoli want Tottenham ’s record signing Tanguy Ndombele on loan and have agreed a €2m fee with the option to buy the Frenchman for €30m. But Ndombele is on £200,000 a week at Spurs and has been offered €8m in Italy.

De Jong rumbles on

Barcelona's transfer activity has been the soap opera of the summer as the debt-ridden club has spent £126m but is now trying to balance the books.

Selling Frenke de Jong to Chelsea or Manchester United for £71m would be one way to raise money except the Dutchman is owed £17m in deferred wages from during the pandemic. Barcelona want him to accept £6m - and take a 50% pay cut if he stays at the Camp Nou.

Ex-Netherlands and Spurs star Rafael van der Vaart, now 39, told Dutch TV station Ziggo Sport: “"You can't treat people like that. Frenkie earns too much? First you sign a contract and then you honour it or you go on good terms but not like that. This is mafia and they must be punished.”

Hammers in for Belgian star

West Ham tried to sign Hans Vanaken in 2020. And now according to Nieuwsblad, the London club is back for the attacking midfielder but Club Bruges are reluctant to sell the player valued at €15m who is under contract until 2025. An initial #8.4m bid has been turned down.

The Belgian club have sold Charles De Ketelaere to Milan for €32m this summer and do not want to lose another big name.

Nice return for Cavani

Ligue 1 club Nice, owned by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, have already signed Aaron Ramsey and Kasper Schmeichel this summer.

Now L’Equipe has revealed that the southern France club are also interested in signing former Manchester United and PSG striker Edinson Cavani, who is available on a free transfer, for a return to France.

Marseille forward Bamba Dieng is another option. The Senegal forward is available for €15m and is a potential target for Newcastle, Fulham and Everton.

Kluivert's next move

Justin Kluivert, the son of Dutch star Patrick, has been linked with a move to the Premier League for years with Manchester United and Arsenal previous potential buyers.

The former Ajax winger, 23, has been on loan at RB Leipzig and Nice and is not wanted by Jose Mourinho at Roma.

Il Romanista reveals that Portuguese clubs Benifica and Sporting have expressed interest without making a bid to leave Fulham and West Ham the favourites to complete a deal.
