Man Utd's £140m double transfer swoop, Tottenham twist in bid for Swansea City star and Mourinho told to focus on Gareth Bale

Here are the latest Premier League transfer news headlines and rumours on Thursday, October 8.

Man Utd's double summer swoop

Manchester United will line up a £140m double swoop to solve their problems in the next summer transfer window, according to reports.

Various outlets claim United will move for RB leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, who will become available for around £38m when a release clause in his contract kicks in. He's the man Old Trafford legend Rio Ferdinand told them to buy above anyone else in the recent window,

United are said to be at the front of the queue, with Liverpool and Arsenal also previously interested.

As well as that potential signing, Dortmund's Jadon Sancho will once again assume the role of number one target as the club look to finally land the £100m man following a prologned saga.

Joe Rodon to Tottenham twist

Tottenham Hotspur could now include defender Cameron Carter-Vickers as part of the bid to sign Swansea City and Wales defender Joe Rodon, according to The Sun.

Spurs have been linked with a move for Rodon, who is said to be valued at £18m by Swansea.

It is reported Carter-Vickers could be offered as a makeweight in any future bid for the 22-year-old centre-back.

The United States international has previously had a successful loan spell with Swansea.

Lionel Messi to Man City (again)

Lionel Messi could be free to join Man City from as early as January if Barcelona press ahead with another round of staff pay cuts.

The Spanish club forced their players to take a 70 per cent deduction in their wages at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, with fresh negotiations now set to take place.

Messi was angered by the way Barca chiefs approached the previous cuts and that was one of the factors which contributed to him requesting to leave the club this summer.

Barcelona managed to keep hold of their captain due to a clause in Messi’s contract meaning he cannot leave until it expires in June.

However, according to Marca, there may now be another option available to Messi.

Southgate's Bale message

England football manager Gareth Southgate has told Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho his number one priority should be getting the most out of Gareth Bale.

Southgate addressed Mourinho - who continually referred to the England boss as "Gary" during a press conference where he was asking for caution to be taken with the number of minutes played by Harry Kane.

"I have to say that he messaged me anyway to apologise," said Southgate.

"I knew because he has called me Gary before, in a news conference. I had no issue with that at all - I said there is only one Gareth (Bale) he needs to get right and he will score all the goals for him this year."
