Manchester United have rejected an approach from Everton to take Chris Smalling on loan.
The centre-back remains part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans, despite the £80m signing of Harry Maguire this week.
United are likely to allow at least one centre-back to go this summer - but Smalling is seen as an important member of the squad.
He was handed a new contract in December, which runs until 2022.
Phil Jones was also given a new deal in February, which ties him to the club until 2023.
Eric Bailly’s medial ligament damage has ruled out any chance of him leaving during this window - but Marcos Rojo is considering his future as he looks likely to be pushed further down the pecking order following Maguire’s arrival.
Axel Tuanzebe could go out on loan.
