Manchester United pulled out of the running Erling Braut Haaland after refusing to meet the financial terms of his move to Borussia Dortmund.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had made the Norwegian striker a leading target in January - even holding face-to-face talks in a bid to convince him to move to Old Trafford.
But after Dortmund confirmed they have won the race for one of the most sought-after prospects in European football it emerged Man Utd had balked at the conditions required to land the 19-year-old.
United believed both Haaland’s agent, Mino Raiola, and father, Alf-Inge, were demanding a percentage of future sales of the teenager.
It’s believed the terms of the agreement would have seen Raiola control the sell-on for Haaland, which United refused to accept during negotiations.

Old Trafford’s hierarchy refused to commit to those terms, which they believed to be a dangerous precedent.
It’s understood United also refused a buyout clause that would have been inserted in the deal.
Haaland has signed a deal until 2024 at Dortmund.
Solskjær remains determined to bring in at least three new signings over the next two windows, with a striker and two midfielders his priority.
