Man Utd reach 4,000th consecutive game with academy graduate in a matchday squad

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad to face Everton saw Manchester United celebrate an historic milestone on Sunday.

With Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Mason Greenwood, Andreas Pereira, Axel Tuanzebe and Scott McTominay among the 18-man squad, United have now named an academy graduate in their senior matchday squad for the 4,000th consecutive game - a run dating back to 1937.

The run, which stretches back over nine decade to before the Second World War, has formed a key part of United's identity, with the Busby Babes and Sir Alex Ferguson's 'Class of '92' the most famous examples of the club's dedication to handing young players an opportunity.

Speaking to United's website in the run-up to the game, Solskjaer said: "Giving young players a chance is a tradition that we are very proud of; it’s part of our DNA and you learn that very quickly when you join the club.

"Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing a player that has come through our Academy thriving on the football pitch.

"Young players can only surprise you and impress you when you give them a chance to show their talent. It’s a milestone that we are proud of and long may it continue."

Solskjaer earned the manager's job on a full-time basis partly down to impressing the Glazers and Ed Woodward with his long-term plans to utilise academy players, and has handed 10 first-team debuts to academy graduates this season.
