Jamie Carragher doesn't believe the Manchester United fan protests on Sunday were as a result of the proposed Super League plans.
The Red Devils were one of six sides to sign up to the breakaway competition which angered those from all corners of football.
United owner Joel Glazer was one of the Super League's architects, but his side have since withdrawn amid huge fan backlash and the threat of penalties.
Fans have long had an issue with the club's ownership and previously staged protests against it.
But the Super League plans have bought it all to a head following their demonstrations on the Old Trafford pitch.
Carragher though believes the Glazers' general running of the club and the financial decisions they've made will have been a huge motivator behind Sunday's protests.
"I did not see Sunday as being a direct response to the Super League proposals," he wrote in the Telegraph.
"It was a demonstration against owners who imposed debt on the club to complete their takeover in 2005 and have taken an estimated £2 billion in revenues since.
"The anti-Glazer campaign began when United were still the strongest team in England under Sir Alex Ferguson.
"Many supporters went as far as forming their own club, FC United, so I do not accept the argument that this is a consequence of the more recent drop in standards on the pitch.
"Recent examples show that supporters are more prepared than ever to mobilise when necessary, which is why it has never been more important for owners to engage.
"It is on the board members to make sure this stops, not just the supporters."
He went on to say: "The incidents at Old Trafford raised several questions. The biggest are why it has come to this and what, if anything, the Glazer family intends to do in order to rebuild a deeply fractured relationship with their fanbase."
