Man Utd predicted starting lineup vs Crystal Palace as midfield decision made

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to throw Donny van de Beek in from the start for his Premier League debut against Crystal Palace.

And the Norwegian is ready to use the Dutchman in the same midfield as Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, as United look to start the season with a bang at Old Trafford.

Van de Beek, the £40million arrival from Ajax, has impressed at the club’s Carrington training ground since completing his move.

But Solskjaer has faced questions over precisely how he can fit he, Pogba and Fernandes all in the same starting lineup.

In a game where United are expected to dominate possession on Saturday, he is ready to use all three, while keeping Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford in the wide attacking roles, with Anthony Martial leading the line.

Van de Beek and Pogba are likely to be asked to operate as a deep-lying midfield pairing, with Fernandes continuing in the No.10 role where he was a major success last term.

That means Fred, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay - the more defensively-minded senior central midfielders within Solskjaer’s squad - all watching from the sidelines.

“He’s settled in really well, he’s a smashing boy,” Solskjaer said.

“Great personality coming in with loads of energy and a big smile every day and he played well against Aston Villa so you’re likely to see him."

With Fernandes, Pogba and Van de Beek all set to start, the question will turn to whether United's attack-minded midfield can be vigilant enough to keep its defence well protected against a Palace side who enjoy playing on the counter attack.

Club captain Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof remain as the first-choice central defensive pairing this term.

David de Gea is expected to get the nod between the sticks once more, ahead of returning Dean Henderson who will be on the bench.

Phil Jones (knee), Axel Tuanzebe (foot) and Sergio Romero (extended holiday) are unavailable.

Man Utd predicted starting XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Pogba, Van De Beek; Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.
