Man Utd plot move for David De Gea replacement amid transfer speculation

Manchester United have reportedly identified Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen as a top target as they eye a replacement for David De Gea.

The Spaniard is being heavily linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford after a tough season having failed to agree a big-money contract extension.

It appears United are already making contingency plans for life without De Gea, with the Daily Record reporting Cillessen is a leading candidate to head to Old Trafford in the summer.

The 30-year-old is understood to have been on United's shortlist for a significant period of time having been identified as a possible replacement for De Gea back when Louis Van Gaal feared he would leave in 2015.

United's recruitment staff have explored several options with De Gea linked with Juventus , Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid as the Red Devils consider cashing in to reinvest in their squad.

Cillessen has decided he wants to leave the Nou Camp in the summer having made just 30 appearances across three season and been unable to displace Marc-Andre ter Stegen as No.1.

Speaking to Dutch TV last month, he said: “First I will go on holiday. And then I hope to have a new club where I can play, because I want to play.”

Antoine Griezmann's Barcelona transfer 'imminent' despite two key doubts

He is reported to have an agreement with Benfica, but with the two clubs unable to agree a fee he could jump at the chance to come to the Premier League.

Cillessen, who is in line to make his final Barcelona appearance in the Copa del Reyfinal against Valencia this weekend, is expected to command a fee of around £25m.

United are still set to explore several other options, whilst they are also likely to look to keep De Gea at the club despite his poor form in the closing weeks of the Premier League campaign.
