Manchester United needed penalties to eventually progress past League One Rochdale and reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Despite regular full internationals such as Phil Jones, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard all starting, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chose to hand the armband to Axel Tuanzebe.
After a goalless first half, United took the lead through promising forward Mason Greenwood in the 68th minute after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had earlier cleared a Dale attack off the line.
However, the League One outfit were able to draw level 14 minutes from time through 16-year-old Luke Mattheson, with the teenager turning a cross into the box past Sergio Romero.
After Juan Mata, Andreas Pereira, Fred and Mason Greenwood all netted their penalties, Daniel James scored the winning spot-kick to send the Red Devils through.

Romero 5: Had little to do, with Rochdale offering little in the way of a threat on the United goal.
Wan-Bissaka 7: Produced some important last-ditch tackles and blocks. Cross for Lingard, who headed over, and cleared off the line.
Tuanzebe 7: Made vital tackle early on after Fred gave ball away. Skipper for the night and led by example. Assured throughout.
Jones 5: Never looked to be moving comfortably in the first-half. No great surprise he didn't emerge for the second-half.
Rojo 5: Pushed forward whenever he could and saw a diving header at the far post saved in the first-half.

Fred 4: Gave the ball away in a dangerous position early on. Saved by Tuanzebe, who made a crucial tackle.
Pogba 5: Returned after missing three games through injury and inexplicably missed a free header in the first-half.
Lingard 5: Sent a glancing header just over from a Wan-Bissaka cross just before the break. Grew into the game after a slow start but still not influential enough.
Pereira 6: Arguably United's most effective player, creatively and in winning back possession.
Chong 5: Wasteful in attack but tracked back well to dispossess Matheson inside his own area the first-half.

Greenwood 7: Crossed for Pogba, who somehow failed to score. Scored his second goal in as many games with low finish.
